Andre Holland in talks to play Huey P. Newton in Don Cheadle-directed series for Apple

The story is based on a ‘Playboy’ article that ran in 2012 about the Black Panther leader’s escape to Cuba

Apple will take on the story of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton for a limited series with Don Cheadle attached to direct the first two episodes.

As reported by Variety, André Holland, from movies like Moonlight and Netflix’s Passing, is in talks to star as Newton in the six-episode series titled The Big Cigar. Jim Hecht will write and executive produce along with Cheadle. Janine Sherman Barrois will serve as showrunner.

The story is based on a 2012 Playboy article of the same name by Joshuah Bearman. It tells the wild story of how Newton eluded an FBI manhunt and fled to Cuba while being pursued for the murder of an underage sex worker and an assault on his tailor.

Late last year, a bronze bust honoring Newton was unveiled in Oakland, California. As reported by theGrio, artist Dana King crafted the statue in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party.

Newton and Bobby Seale co-founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California in 1966. The organization was best known for its 10-point program for “Black and oppressed” people. The program demanded full employment, healthcare, education, fair housing, police accountability and an end to wars. At its height, the Black Panther Party ran community medical clinics, a free breakfast program for children, artist cooperatives, and a newspaper.

The Newton bust was installed at Dr. Huey P. Newton Way (formerly 9th Street) and Mandela Parkway in West Oakland. The intersection is close to where Newton was gunned down in 1989.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Fredrika said of her husband: “I would like for people to see him as a total human being.”

“He wasn’t just an iconic figure in a wicker chair,” she said. “This was a man with vulnerabilities, with feelings, with insecurities, with frailties, just like anybody.”

Lovecraft Country producer Misha Green signs deal with Apple TV+

The news comes one week after HBO abruptly cancelled Green’s acclaimed drama series “Lovecraft Country”

Don’t worry Lovecraft Country fans, creator Misha Green has found a new home with Apple TV+.

The 36-year-old writer, director and producer has inked a lucrative, multi-year deal with Apple, just one week after the surprise cancellation of her hit HBO drama Lovecraft Country.

After several companies allegedly competed to sign Green, she is now set to create new shows for Apple TV+, the tech giant’s streaming platform.

Lovecraft Country took the world by storm after its release in 2020, garnering high praise from critics and earning a nomination for best drama series at the Golden Globes earlier this year. Based off of Matt Ruff’s 2016 namesake novel, the fantasy drama series explores themes of race, horror, power and love through a supernatural lens.

Starring Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Kenneth Williams, Wunmi Mosaku and more, the series follows army veteran Atticus Freeman (Majors), his friend Letitia (Smollett) and his uncle George (Vance) as they embark on a cross-country road trip through Jim Crow-era America.

The show’s creative team, whose list of producers included the likes of Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, was allegedly in the midst of planning a second season set to be called Lovecraft Country: Supremacy when HBO opted not to renew the series, causing uproar from fans.

“Wish we could have brought you #LovecraftCountry: Supremacy. Thank you to everyone who watched and engaged,” Green tweeted after news of the cancellation broke.

Singer-songwriter and actress Chloe Bailey of Grown-ish and Chloe x Halle fame tweeted she was “really sad” about the cancellation of her “favorite show.”

Despite the show’s abrupt end, Green has many new projects in the works, many which began before the Apple deal.

She is set to write and produce the next Tomb Raider movie, a reboot of “Blaxploitation” film Cleopatra Jones and new film The Mother, starring Jennifer Lopez. Green is also executive producing the new action film Fuel alongside Smollett.

Green rose to fame in 2016 following the release of her WGN series Underground, which depicted stories of the Underground Railroad. She co-created and executive produced the show, which also starred Smollett and ran for two seasons.

The NYU-graduate has also contributed to shows like Sons of Anarchy, Helix, Heroes, and Spartacus.

With her new Apple deal, she reunites with worldwide video chiefs Zach Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, as well as head of programming Matt Cherniss and head of communications and publicity Rita Cooper Lee, all of whom collaborated with Green on Underground.

Apple TV+ has had a number of original hit shows since debuting in November 2019, including Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Truth Be Told. Green will be joining a star-studded list of producers with similar deals, including Idris Elba, Tracy Oliver, Jon Stewart, and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss.
